Joshua Merriken was born on December 23, 1704, in Anne Arundel County, British Colonial Maryland, the 7th child of Joshua Merriken and Grace Bayly.

Joshua grew up on his father's 400 acre plantation “Scotland”, located in the Broadneck near the Chesapeake Bay and Scotcher's Creek, today's Meredith Creek. When Joshua was 8 years old, his father died. Joshua's father devised half of “Scotland” to Joshua, the other half to Joshua's oldest brother John.

Shortly after the death of his father, Joshua's mother died. Joshua and his siblings remained with their brother John who was of the age of majority.

Joshua Merriken died at the age of 16 on May 10, 1721, in Anne Arundel County, British Colonial Maryland.

Joshua's inheritance, 200 acres of “Scotland”, reverted to his oldest brother John.
