Joseph Jean patented land in Muscatine, Iowa, in 1841 - Township 76 N, Range 004W, Sections 14 and 15. The land is located on the Cedar River north and west of the intersection of Oak Grove Road and Echo Avenue. Joseph Jean's wife Sarah died in 1853 at the age of 61 and according to Jean family history, Joseph went to live with his son in nearby Conesville and leased his land. Prior to moving, Joseph buried his wife across the street and deeded part of his land, his wife's burial place, to Cedar Township. The burial place was called Jean's Cemetery. Today, it is known as Oak Grove Cemetery (on Oak Grove Road). Joseph was later buried next to his wife in 1873.
